My herd has my back

These days, when I’m far from being at my best, I’m deeply moved to see how my herd takes care of me. From the outside, it might seem like Cokko is withdrawing. He’s not interested in doing much—fewer walks, less training. He just wants to stay in the paddock, relax, and hang out. But I know it’s because he’s using a lot of energy to heal me. Both when I’m with them and when I’m at home. And every single day, I remember to thank him for his efforts and ask how I can give back to him, too.

It’s clear they’ve divided the roles among themselves, each contributing what they’re best at. Chanel has taken on the role of "getting me out." So, when I come with the halters and Cokko walks away, she’s eagerly ready, sticking her head into the halter. I don’t feel like I’m walking her—it feels like she’s walking me. It’s as if she knows I need to move, to do something, and she gladly takes charge of that. Until she feels I’ve had enough, then she turns around and heads home, content with having fulfilled her responsibility.

Arwen has a third role. Even though my animals don’t live at the same address, I know they communicate. She’s my shadow, following me everywhere and never letting me be alone. She doesn’t beg for walks like she usually does but respects that I’m taking things at my own pace and doing what I can. She goes to bed at the same time as I do, stays in bed until I get up, and never leaves my side.

I’m so touched to be part of this herd. I feel so grateful for the way they circle around me and care for me. No conflicts, no complaints—everyone contributes what they can. And when I talk about it, Chanel simply says, “You take care of us when we’re sick; now we’re doing the same for you.” It brings tears to my eyes and gives me a little more energy, a little more strength, and a little more courage to face things.

Nothing will ever mean more to me than being part of this herd.

"What will it take to ensure the use of horses in sports in the future?"

That was the title of an article I read the other day. In general, this is a question that has been raised from many different sides this year. I understand the idea behind the question and the debate – but I just feel that we're starting with the wrong question entirely.

The idea of “using horses” or “using” any animal at all is incredibly outdated. It quickly starts to sound as if we’re degrading animals to something we own and have control over simply because we own them. Instead of recognizing that animals are independent beings who shouldn’t be “used” but with whom we can build a relationship and create a partnership. I feel that’s where it already goes wrong! We need to acknowledge that these are living beings, who also have a say in their future and have different needs.

Secondly, why are we asking this question to each other and to politicians, instead of asking it to the horses? What if we instead asked ourselves: “What would it take for my horse to want to work with me in sports?” I think approaching it this way could solve a lot. How can we create environments, a judging system, a setup that takes the horses’ needs into account? Something designed on the horse’s terms rather than the rider’s? So that horses want to participate, and it’s healthy and beneficial for them to be part of the sport?

Let’s forget about securing the sport – and instead focus on securing the welfare of the horses. Without the horses, there is no sport. So instead of asking what it will take for us to use horses in the future, let’s focus on questions like, “how can we ensure that horse welfare is prioritized in sports going forward?” “how can we safeguard horses physically and mentally when they’re part of the sport?” “how can we change our mindset so there’s more room for the horses in sports?”

I wish we had much more focus in this debate on the HORSES, rather than our USE of them and how we can preserve the SPORT. To get there, I think we need to start asking very different questions that are less about us and much more about the horses.

My sensitive self…

Sometimes I forget how sensitive I am, and then it suddenly hits me. Right now, I’m going through some big changes at home, and it’s leaving its mark. When the foundation of my life is shaken, I truly feel how sensitive I am. I feel tired, unmotivated, and quiet.

I can often forget how sensitive I am because I’ve created a daily life where there’s room for my sensitivity most days, where I actually can and should use my sensitive self in my life. There was a time when I thought of my sensitivity as an enemy, something that held me back from things I thought I wanted. But today, I remember that it’s a gift, a helper that shows me what is true for me.

Right now, when I feel tired and unmotivated, it doesn’t feel like a gift. And I have to remind myself not to wish it away. I have to remind myself that my sensitivity helps me and is currently showing me that I need calm, stability, and a base to lean into.

In the past, I wanted to learn to control my sensitivity. I often felt like I was told it was wrong. I believed I had to learn to be less sensitive, less easily affected, that I had to learn to not care about things, to park my feelings. But I don’t want that anymore. My sensitivity is a part of me, and I want it to have room to exist. I want to create a life where my sensitivity has space, where I surround myself with people who understand, and where I create a world that is soft.

Because it’s also my sensitivity that helps me sense what animals want to say, that gives me empathy for others, that lets my intuition guide me through life, and helps me understand my longings and needs better. I wouldn’t want to be without any of it. So right now, I’m practicing embracing and welcoming my sensitive self, with all her needs for slowness and security.

Bogen henvender sig til dyreinteresserede børn og unge i alderen 7-13 år. Missionen med bogen er at vise børn og unge, at det at kommunikere med dyr er helt naturligt. At der er måder vi kan lytte til dyrene og respektere dem på. At lade børn og unge, der allerede har en dyb kontakt med dyrene føle sig set og hørt.

Conversations about… living with a ‘disability’

Dino is a beautiful horse who has lived with just one eye for many years. I asked him about loving and accepting oneself despite any disabilities one might have. About his own disability, he says: “I don’t notice it anymore. It’s a part of me. An extension of me.” He conveys a sense of pride in being different, playfully presenting himself as a pirate with an eye patch. He is proud of how he copes despite his circumstances and what his disability has taught him. He has learned to have elevated calmness and perspective. He doesn’t see it as a disability but as special skills he has gained—and as a way of life.

“I am invaluable,” he says when I ask about his sense of worth. “I bring calm and stability. I am always the same and reliable. I am worth my weight in gold, and I am the glue that holds it all together.” He feels very proud and believes he has an important role.

I ask about accepting oneself. “We are all crooked shapes and have our quirks. Practice seeing the quirks in others. Practice seeing that these are not faults or shortcomings in you but an ingrained part of yourself. Stop pushing it away or trying to rid yourself of it. You need to see it as a part of you and use it to your advantage instead!” He shows me that my introversion has taught me to be empathetic, patient, quiet, and present—not a limitation but important skills I have learned and use daily in my work and life.

He says: “We should all stand out as the quirky types we are, without having to hide anything away. It’s an integral part of you; use it instead of throwing it away and hiding it. Use the gifts your ‘flaws’ and ‘disabilities’ have given you. You are quirky. We all are. Enjoy it.”

This truly gave me something to think about. I have often heard that these are things we just need to ‘heal’ and move on from. But what if our quirks and imperfections are not something we need to heal or overcome—but rather something we should own, learn from, and carry with us on life’s journey?

What is your perspective?

I will never forget a session I had with a dog. The owner contacted me because the dog was nipping at them, and she wanted to understand why. The dog showed me that she was incredibly sensitive and often felt that her boundaries were being crossed. If someone wanted to pet her, held her too tightly, or asked too much of her, she became overwhelmed and reacted.

The owner called me afterwards. She said, “At first, I thought you had the wrong dog. We have always seen her as dominant and as if she tried to take charge, so I couldn’t understand what you wrote. But now I’ve tried your advice, and it works; she no longer bites us, so it’s me who misunderstood her.”

Sometimes we forget how important our thoughts and understanding of animals are because we interpret their behavior through these lenses. We end up acting and treating the animals based on these interpretations.

For example, I recently guided a woman and her horse. She had trouble getting the hooves cleaned, but others could do it just fine. She had been told that the horse was just ‘testing’ her. When I asked, the horse told me it had poor balance, and the way she held the leg and lacked strength made it harder for the horse to stand still when she was the one cleaning the hooves.

If we believe the horse is ‘testing’ us we will respond differently. Perhaps we have less patience, reprimand more, or approach training differently. On the other hand, if we believe the horse is confused or physically struggling, we might support the animal more physically and be more patient.

Therefore, it is crucial how we view animals and how we speak and think about them. I believe in their innocence until proven otherwise. I experience that animals have pure and good intentions with everything they do—and when I remind myself of this, I can approach them in a loving, kind, and calm manner, just as they deserve.
